They haven’t quite succeeded in that regard. Instead, As We Weep over Life serves as proof from the duo Malevolus (instruments) and Margul Demonic (vocals) that ambient funeral doom still retains its relevance. Despite relying on genre pillars like excruciatingly slow guitars, solemn chanting, and an overpowering sense of omnipresent desolation, its 38 minutes fly by even after repeated spins. This may be largely due to the fact that The Triumph of Ruin is not built firmly upon the aforementioned pillars but instead nonchalantly leans against them. - [Until Death Overtakes Me – Diagenesis](https://funeraldoom.org/until-death-overtakes-me-diagenesis/) - At the beginning of December 2024, Until Death Overtakes Me released their long-awaited and carefully crafted new album. A piece of work matured since 2009 by a seasoned craftsman. Diagenesis, as the fitting title suggests, refers to the geological process of sediment solidification and the subsequent transformation of the resulting sedimentary rocks under relatively low pressure and temperatures until their eventual erosion. The title is particularly appropriate for an album that took fifteen years to mature, delves into prolonged mourning and nonexistence, and employs gliding ambient funeral doom to do so. - [Dauðaró – Ylur](https://funeraldoom.org/daudaro-ylur/) - The one-man Iceland-based funeral doom band Dauðaró returns with another incredible release. "Ylur" is one 47-minute-long song that unfolds in a very special way. The story behind the album's inspiration is nothing short of amazing. Basically, Dauðaró saw the eruption of a volcano, an incredible event he witnessed from the balcony of his own home. To create music like this on the spur of the moment is nothing short of amazing in itself. With "Ylur," Dauðaró takes a concept that most bands or musicians would have trouble building into such a musical tapestry. Not only is this a highly successful release, but it is one that touches on a variety of emotions, a music that reaches down into the very nature of what makes the planet, and us, tick. - [Sektarism – Le Son des Stigmates](https://funeraldoom.org/sektarism-le-son-des-stigmates/) - Sektarism, a band that embraces self-inflicted pain and the rejection of all morality as central elements of spiritual transfiguration, focuses on the re-spiritualization of the individual through suffering. This process aims to liberate the self from societal and moral constraints. Sektarism delivers a consistent synthesis of Funeral Doom, Chaos Gnosticism, Drone Doom, and Post-Industrial, where pain and suffering pave the way to spirituality. Le Son des Stigmates is a raw, brutal, and oppressive passage through Kafka’s penal colony—a visit to a foreign ritual of purposeful self-harm under the framework of Gnostic Satanism. - [Pantheïst – The Pains of Sleep](https://funeraldoom.org/pantheist-the-pains-of-sleep/) - Here is a band that needs no introduction, so I'll get straight to the point. Pantheïst’s The Pains of Sleep is a remarkable EP that showcases the band’s unique ability to merge profound lyrical themes with lush, expansive compositions. Released in 2005, this record is a testament to the power of funeral doom as an extremely expressive and profoundly impactful art form. With a combination of original compositions and remastered early material, this EP serves as a special gift, filled with familiar, but refined tracks for devoted fans. It is my favourite Pantheïst release and one of my favourite funeral doom releases of all time as well. - [The Nihilistic Front – The Four Seasons In Misery](https://funeraldoom.org/the-nihilist-front-the-four-seasons-in-misery/) - The Nihilistic Front lock themselves in a dark, loud, and often stiflingly hot room to play themselves into a kind of trance, stripping the construction of reality, the order of things, the self from the flesh. Standing close together, the duo pounds out a mostly monotonous framework on their instruments, occasionally deviating in subtle ways. With The Four Seasons in Misery, The Nihilistic Front documented this approach for the first time. Staying close to industrial tradition, they refused any promotion or follow-up work with the recorded music. No live performances, no further production—this was the project’s credo. The moment itself was all that mattered. The recording was completed, quickly mixed, and released without fanfare. - [Aeternum Sacris – 2011.03.11](https://funeraldoom.org/aeternum-sacris-2011-03-11/) - This one-man project from Kawasaki (between Tokyo and Yokohama) creates a mournfully sorrowful funeral doom characterized by dense and emotionally charged compositions. The music is often reservedly dark, with high atmospheric density and an oppressive mood. The mastermind behind the project goes simply by Sacris, maintaining a degree of anonymity in the global cultural sphere. For Sacris, what matters is the music itself, which is left to speak on its own merits. The demo that laid the foundation for this album was offered for free download, accompanied by a request: instead of paying him, listeners were encouraged to donate the money to victims of the disaster or other charitable causes.
